Evening mood in the moor

| 1 IMAGE IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

At the time of the crane migration, up to 20,000 cranes had already been counted as overnight stays in the Tister Moor in Lower Saxony, Germany. One evening before sunset I drove to the moor, but I wasn’t alone by far. The parking lot was nearly overcrowded and I only got a free parking place at the outermost end. A hiking trail leads over 1.5 km to two observation towers on the moor landscape. I had climbed the higher tower and had found at first only in the second row a place to the view. Later the tower should have been filled up into the sixth row with crane observers.

But I could make this picture when only 4 persons were still on the tower and I had free view in direction west. I love these light moods, when the purple sky color is reflected on the ground, as here on the flooded moorland. I had something comparable in Hamburg once, when I had photographed the Dockland after a rain shower.

Hafencity - Altes Zollhaus

Hafencity — Old customs house

The contrast between the beautiful Old Customs House and the modern office buildings at Ericusspitze fascinates me again and again. But on this day, on my way home through the Hafencity, the autumn sunshine at the golden hour offered me a special contrast. Only the Old Customs House and the Ericus Bridge were illuminated by the warm rays of the setting sun! On the façade one of the trees standing on the shore can still be seen. Everything was flooded with warm light.
In the background you can see the brick building of the fruit yard of Hamburg shining in the sun.

Hamburg Town Hall in autumn mood

A picture like I had for over a week in my mind. On the way home on a Friday evening I had seen the avenue trees at the Ballindamm in great autumn coloring and from the corner of my eye still the setting sun with its warm light on the trees. A week later I had the opportunity to be there again at the time of the golden hour. Hamburg’s streets were close to the traffic infarction and I could just get from the office to the street Neuer Jungfernstieg at the Alster to catch the very last parking lot there. It should fit like this. On the way to the corner Ballindamm / Lombardsbrücke I heard the loud noises of the dense traffic. Many drivers were aggressive, it was wildly honked, because again and again the large crossing was blocked by other drivers.

But when I had set up my tripod and thought about how I would get the construction cranes from the picture, I didn’t hear anything more about the street noise. That is the beautiful and at the same time fascinating thing about photography — I can sink again and again into my picture compositions and not perceive anything around me anymore. So I was able to capture this beautiful picture with autumn trees and the Hamburg Town Hall in the background.

Early October at the Binnenalster. It is still warm in summer in Hamburg and so countless people have gathered at sunset along the shoreline at the Lombards Bridge. Many benches invite to stay and so not only we photographers enjoy the view towards Jungfernstieg.

I took countless photos, but this evening I discovered the trees to the left and right of me to frame the picture. It was a wonderful atmosphere during the blue hour, wasn’t it?

St. Severin Church

When I came back with my son from an evening excursion to the west coast and I saw the church beautifully illuminated outside the village, it was clear to me that I wanted to go there again.
On the last evening before our departure from the island of Sylt, I had set off for the evening hour there. I had some time to explore the surroundings before the church lighting was switched on and a little later also the blue hour began. It was great to see that the middle way out to the cemetery got enough light to cut the darkness in the foreground and direct the view to the church.

Before returning to the car, I walked a little along the road towards Keitum. From there I had seen the church so beautifully illuminated a few evenings before.

Golden hour near Rantum

It couldn’t have been any different, but during a stay of several days on Sylt the time of the sunset on the west coast is also part of it. Moreover, with mixed clouds over the day promised to become an interesting play of colours. Again and again there were rain showers over the island and so we left for Rantum at sunset. We should be rewarded again, even if there were almost too many clouds in the west to see the suns setting. But at the Golden Hour we just had a fantastic rain cloud in the north of us.

Keitum - frühmorgens am Watt (0145)

Keitum — early in the morning

| 1 IMAGE IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

During the days on Sylt in the morning hours I was always drawn to the mudflat side in Keitum — mostly on my way to the bakery. Every morning there was a different light atmosphere. The special thing about the time before sunrise with a view to the east is that the sky is already brighter, but before that the darker clouds stand out. That was this morning with a special purple color mood, which was also reflected at low tide on the almost dry tidal flats.

Some time later, the sun rose between the clouds and I could continue my way to the baker to get some rolls for breakfast.
