Internationales Maritimes Museum

International Maritime Museum

In the early morning hours, the sun slowly rises and colors the clouds brightly. In the background you can see the new buildings at Magdeburger Hafen, with the rotors on the roof the Greenpeace headquarters. In the middle is the International Maritime Museum in the old Kaispeicher B. I had gone into Hamburg to photograph in the modern subway stations of the Hafencity and in contrast to that the old office buildings of the city. When I came out of the underground car park in Hafencity to daylight, I was surprised by the atmosphere of the rising sun.

The water level was quite high after the stormy days before and I saw how the water continued to flow into the harbor basins. Therefore I chose a long exposure to give the water peace and quiet and to show the lights of the buildings on a large area. Nevertheless you can still see the flow patterns on the water surface.

Altes Kloepperhaus (0415)

Downtown Hamburg — Altes Klöpperhaus

Alters Klöpperhaus is a beautifully renovated Art Nouveau office building. The website of the Art-Invest project of the building writes about it:

At the turn of the century, cotton dealer Wilhelm Klöpper built a prestigious address for his cotton company directly on Hamburg’s Rödingsmarkt — and at the same time created a completely new type of building for Hamburg: The Kontorhaus. Modern furnishings transform the loft-like floors into future-oriented working environments.

Today the company Mindspace has moved in there over many floors as a provider for coworking spaces. From the staircase you can see the specially furnished rooms. I’m amazed at how the office working world has changed and ask myself every time how you can concentrate on your work. Different sofa corners, a bar on one floor to get together.

The staircase around a light shaft animated me to do some photographic experiments. What about this strict diagonal? read more or write a comment …

Ellernstorsbrücke (0195)

Ellernstorsbrücke at dawn

On two days over the turn of the year we had sunshine and not grey clouds together with drizzle. Photographically it was almost as boring because there weren’t any clouds in the sky that evening. But I was drawn to Hamburg just because of the dryness. After photographing the Heiligengeist Bridge over the Alsterfleet a few days before, I discovered the Herrengrabenfleet that runs west of the Alsterfleet. There is Hamburg second oldest bridge the Ellernstorsbrücke from the year 1668.

I have decided for this strongly condensed view, so the bridge comes into focus. Around it there are many modern buildings that can push the bridge into the background. In addition, the pure blue sky would have contributed little to the picture.

U-Bahn Hafencity Universität (0015)

Underground station Hafencity Universität

For a long time, the Hafencity Universität stop was the terminus of the U4 underground line in Hamburg. With the opening of the new station Elbbrücken, the trains only pass through here. But what has remained is the wonderful light installation. The light cubes on the ceiling illuminate the platform in white, but the ceiling and the side walls of the subway station alternate regularly in bright colors. Blue, green, red, violet…

I also like to think back to the Westfriedhof subway station in Munich, which I photographed once in 2015. But the light installation there is different. Blue fluorescent tubes illuminate the side walls and in three different areas the lampshades are in yellow, red and blue. But this is best seen in my pictures in my Munich portfolio. read more or write a comment …

Alsterfleet mit Heiligengeistbrücke

Alsterfleet with Heiligengeist Bridge

The Alsterfleet with a view of the Heiligengeist Bridge. On the left is an old finance building (Oberfinanzdirektion), which has been converted into a luxury hotel and will be opened in 2019 as Fraser Suites. On the right is the Hotel Steigenberger, which was built directly over the western bridgehead.

It’s always interesting to see what’s new in Hamburg when you walk through the city with your eyes open. I noticed the building of the historical Oberfinanzdirektion from the subway station Rödingsmarkt, because the facade is set in scene with many accent lights. You can also see it from this side. The brick facade as well as the individual window reveals are accentuated with spotlights.

Today the Alsterfleet is the only navigable canal that connects the Alster with the Elbe. It runs from the Alster lock at the town hall to the Baumwall at the river Elve.

Handwerkskammer Hamburg (0021)

Chamber of Crafts of Hamburg — Staircase

After I was already in March 2017 in the Chamber of Crafts for a photo session, this time I went with a new lens into the staircases of this office building. The cover picture was taken with 33mm focal length and can be seen in the normal range. Nevertheless, I like the two different color tones in this condensed representation of the two upper floors, the reddish light from the upper floor and the cold light, almost a little thorough light from the floors below. The picture also shows the special features of the pretty railing and the unusual staircase.

U-Bahnhof Elbbrücken (0015)

At the underground station Elbbrücken

Finally I got the chance to take pictures in the newly opened underground station »Elbbrücken«. Of course for me there is always a central perspective, which I made in this case from the passage to the Skywalk. The Skywalk will connect the two underground and suburban train stations Elbbrücken in the coming years. The suburban train station is currently under construction.

At the northern end of the subway station is the staircase to the Sykwalk with stairs on both sides and a central escalator. The lighting of the sidewalks on the stairs and passages is interesting. The lamps are installed in the handrails and therefore do not dazzle. In addition, the architecture remains quite clear.
