Keitum - Takerwai No. 2 (0241)

Frisian houses in Keitum

| 14 IMAGES IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

It is too beautiful to simply walk through this old Frisian village with a camera and one lens. Until the 18th century many whaling captains lived in Keitum and built beautiful houses. They stand today still quite closely together, because they did not possess barns and therefore also stood on smaller properties.

Especially in the Takerwai there are several pieces of jewellery to admire and to discover as a photographer. Again and again I noticed small details at the houses and captured them in the picture.
To my surprise many of the farmer gardens around the houses were still in bloom, as well as the many typical roses on the frisian walls or at the house entrances.

This time I have included the pictures as a large gallery in my blog post, so they can be loaded large and browsed with one click. read more or write a comment …

Storm pulling away

At the morning after the storm day I was drawn to the mudflat side of the island Sylt. At sunrise it still rained, but a short time later the rain area had moved over the island and the sun came out behind it. It was a great atmosphere.

Seagull swarms drew through the picture and let their screams be heard. Only in the work at the computer I noticed, how great the swings of the seagulls were illuminated by the sun and stood out so from the dark cloud wall.

Storm on the horizon

A completely different view of the rain area than my recently published picture of the surf showed. Now taken with a wide angle lens, you can see the rain area approaching from southwest. Not yet the whole sky is grey, but a few kilometres off the coast it is already raining. From the south the sun is  blinding into my lens and you can clearly see some sunrays shining on the surf.

I love such cloud situations, if there is still a little blue sky to see and the contrast between white clouds and grey rain clouds is clearly to be seen.

On Friday the first autumn storm raged over Germany and I was with my family at the beach of Kampen on the island of Sylt at the storm hood. On that day a few rain showers pulled over the island, otherwise sunshine prevailed. With gusts of wind of over 110 km/h it was not easy to photograph at all on the beach. I was not able to change the lens at all. So I had to get along with my standard zoom, when I got to see this wonderful light mood.

In the background the next rain area came up. In the foreground you can see a shallow mark between the two wave centres and the whole turbulent sea is illuminated by the sun from behind!
When I saw this wave rushing up, I just had the chance to pull up my camera and take a small series of 3 pictures of how the wave broke. This picture is the most beautiful because a part of the wave was not broken yet. I only cropped it in a light panorama format.

Steam Engines at Kiekeberg Museum

Every two years a meeting of steam engines and tractors takes place at Kiekeberg. I am always fascinated to see the old technology of steam engines in operation. Matching the agricultural machinery at the meeting, one of the steam engines was used to drive a threshing machine. To my astonishment those threshing machines were still used in Germany until the beginning of the 70s! read more or write a comment …

Forging — Master & Apprentice

| 3 IMAGES IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

Master & apprentice forging hinges. It was interesting to see how master and apprentice worked hand in hand to forge deepenings in the previously forged hinges. While the master positioned his hammer very precisely so that the deepenings for the fixing holes were at the same height in all bands, his apprentice had to hit the hammer head precisely with a sledge hammer. Not only the accuracy of the target plays a role, also the same force as possible with all strokes, so that all deepenings also became equally deep.

I could observe a great cooperation here. Thankfully, the many phases of the forging work were also shown to us afterwards. First the steel band was beveled so that it had a better form-fit to the band after winding. Then it was slightly chamfered to make it easier to wind and to keep grease inside the hinge at later use. The penultimate step consisted of thinning out and decorating towards the end, so that it also became an artistically beautiful door hinge. I have captured the last step of work in my pictures.

Kiekeberg — Anvil Sound & Fire Embers

| 3 IMAGES IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

Once a year many blacksmiths come to the Kiekeberg Museum to show visitors the old craftsmanship. In the old blacksmith’s shop from 1844 (however, in the condition of 1970, because the original furnishings from this time have been preserved) the blacksmiths from Tiedgen and Schmalz show their skills many times. This time Mr. Tiedgen was at the forge with his apprentice. After I had taken the first photo, I was fascinated to put the red hair of the young blacksmith illuminated from the forge suitably in the picture. Fortunately, not the entire back wall was illuminated by the blacksmith’s fire, as the chimney cast a wide shadow cone against the wall above the fire. This had to become the suitable background for my forging portraits. read more or write a comment …
