Lüneburg - St. Nicolai (0023)

St. Nicolai Church in Lüneburg

On May 1st I was allowed to take some special pictures of the St. Nicolai Church in Lüneburg. But at the beginning of my discovery tour through the church stood a long desired picture of the star vault in the nave of the old ship’s church in the water district of Lüneburg. When I set up my tripod, it was more a coincidence that I was able to take this dynamic picture of the vault. I had just aligned the camera vertically upwards and placed it under the centre. Still the tripod head was not turned parallel to the walls of the church and thus the exciting diagonal showed up in my viewfinder.

It is impressive to enter this church built of bricks in basilica style. Immediately one notices the high (93,5 feet) but also narrow central nave. With its eight-pointed star vault it should be unique in Northern Germany. To be able to see the details better, I took it again with another lens.

Bees at work

Since the middle of April the rape fields in Northern Germany have been in bloom and since Easter it has been so warm that the beehives have been placed in the fields. In my hometown, right next to the avenue from the main road into the small town old centre with a few farmbuildings, the beehives stand next to the avenue trees and in the afternoon hours they are partially protected from direct sunlight. This was ideal for a special image in the afternoon. The bees that swarm out of the hives are still in the shade, while behind them the rape field glows bright yellow.
For all SmartPhone users: Click on the picture and zoom in, otherwise the bees cannot be seen!

In the morning hours it was quite different. It was still cool and the light came (of course) from the other direction. Only a few bees were flying, even though there was some movement at the exit of the hive. In good portrait light the wings of the bees were highlighted by an edge light. read more or write a comment …

Altes Land - Apfelblüten (0044)

Apple Blossoms

| 4 IMAGES IN THE BLOGPOST | No Comments

First I had shown the pear blossoms in the last days, which are to be found at the trees of a pear avenue to the yard of Mrs. Behr. I had also learned from Mrs Behr that each tree in the avenue produces a different variety. So it is certainly worth comparing the blossoms (but I have never done this …)

Further into the orchards there are many apple and cherry trees. In contrast to the pears, around Easter there were still few blossoms of the apple trees open. But this is exactly what I find so beautiful, because the closed blossoms of this apple variety were so beautiful pink. In these pictures you can see the difference between the pear and apple blossoms. The apple blossoms are clearly dominated by several large pistils with scars, surrounded by many stamens, while the pear is much more »filigree«.

Pear Blossoms

On Easter weekend I was in the fruit growing area »Altes Land« (near to the city of Hamburg) for a short visit, the cherry trees were in full bloom, but the pear and apple trees were just beginning to blossom. Some blossoms were already open, others still closed or rising. That was the attraction here, especially with the pear blossoms, which still show a hint of pink when closed and not everything shine in white.

Lüneburg - AmStintmarkt (IV)

Lüneburg’s Stintmarkt in infrared

A classic view of Lüneburg: The Stintmarkt with the old crane from 1797.

With this picture I open the infrared season 2019 — my 16th since the beginning of my infrared photography in 2004. Today I had a day in Lüneburg and due to the weather conditions I had taken my infrared camera with me. It was so wonderfully warm that the cafés around the Stintmarkt were well visited, although I could take the chance that the tables in the foreground were just empty.
I love so much the beam of light that runs from the front right over the cobblestones and also illuminates the railing. Like a finger pointing at the old crane!

Hamburg - Sprinkenhof

Sprinkenhof Office Building

A classic view of Hamburg. The Sprinkenhof Office Building in the Kontorhaus district of the World Heritage Site. It’s no wonder that the entire quarter was given this status. It is impressive to stand here in the courtyard of the brick building and look up. Many floors of dark brick with white window frames as contrast.

I especially loved the light in the windows this winter morning. They give the picture a bit of warmth in contrast to the cool blue sky.

I took the picture with the camera on a floor stand. I had to push the tripod plate back and forth for a long time until the building stood vertically in the middle above the camera. But the people who work here are accustomed to photographers making contortions in the courtyard.
