Yellowstone - Black Sand Basin (1890)

Black Sand Basin

The Black Sand Basin is located on the Yellowstone National Park’s ring road only 1.5 km northwest of Old Faithful. It is an isolated hydrothermal area with large hot springs and some small geysers, which got its name from some occurrences of black obsidian sand. I would have called this area White Sand! The Opalescent Pool is located close to the car park. I love this sight of the blue spring in the middle of the dead lodgehole pines and the white ground. The water from the surrounding geysers and springs contains large amounts of silica, which was absorbed by the tree trunks over time and is now reminiscent of white socks, why they are also called white »bobby sock« trees. Where there is no longer any water flowing, the silica also provides the white soil. Everywhere in Yellowstone National Park you will find the white ground.

The southernmost collection of geysers and hot springs of the Yellowstone National Park can be found on the West Thumb Geyser Basin, right on the western shore of the large Yellowstone Lake. On our way from the Grand Teton National Park towards our accommodation at Old Faithful, we passed the junction of West Thumb. Here, the ring road branches off to the north along the Yellowstone Lake along Fishing Bridge to the Canyon Village. We had a lot of time, so we took off for a short walk along the Geyser Basin.

T.A. Moulton Barn in yellow sunlight! Yellow are the meadows around the barn, in the background the Grand Teton.

After my visit at Schwalbacher’s Landing to capture the Grand Teton and it’s reflection in the Snake River I drove just a view miles south to the Mormon Row to take some pictures of the lovely old and famous Moulton Barn. This barn was built between 1912 and 1945 by a Mormon settler and his sons.

Grand Teton at Sunrise

At our first visit to Schwalbacher’s Landing I know, I want to to be here a second time in early morning hours, when the sunrise will illuminate the Grand Teton. I dreamed of gigantic clouds over the Grand Teton, with it’s reflection in the Snake River. But during our time in the Grand Teton National Park, we had clear sky every morning and first clouds that arose in the afternoon.

Nevertheless I stood up at 5:30 and drove to Schwalbacher’s Landing. I was a bit surprised to found the last parking space and a lot of photographers at the Snake River! It was nearly ¾ of an hour before sunrise and I didn’t got to my favorite place. There were a photo course of 20 people with its teacher and he stood at the best perspective to view the reflection of the Grand Teton. I managed to take my shot between two other photographers, but without my wide angle lens.

The colors on top of the mountains where amazing! Even I had no clouds for my picture I have dreamed of!
